first words update
Since I posted about Ewan's first word(s), we've become less sure about "kitty" and more sure about "hi." He is saying "hi" all the time now, and with some context (as opposed to mama and dada, which he says, but still seem to be more like babbling). "Hi" is a bit of an abstract word for a baby to really understand, but he seems to get that you say it when you first see or are happy to see someone or something. He mostly says it to other cute little things, like the pets, other babies or kids, and even his stuffed animals, but lately he's been saying it more to us and other adults, too. He seems to also get that usually something comes after the "hi" (as in, the person's name), hence the "Hi, kitty." He often says something along those lines, but it's not always to the kitty, and it tends to sound more like "giddy" or "diddy" or "dee-dee" or just "dee." If we model it, sometimes he gets a little closer, and a few times he's said it pretty clearly. Anyway, I think it's official that "hi" is Ewan's first word (with "kitty" as a possible second), which seems so fitting since he is so social. He's been getting people to say "hi" to him for months, just by staring at them and smiling until they see him and make eye contact. It also goes nicely with his new skill of waving, and occasionally we'll even get a combo verbal and physical/signed "hi." We will work on getting a video soon.
